Communication access and notes for people who need alternative or additional support
Imagine you are sitting in a class or meeting where a person is lecturing, and those around you are discussing interesting points.
Now imagine that when these people move their mouths, no sounds come out . . but somehow everyone else in the room knows what is being said . . . and there you sit, missing out on everything.
This is the frustrating situation encountered by many people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
They need some additional support to have full access to the communication flow.
TypeWell provides them this communication access.
TypeWell is a system for transcribing speech to text.
It is an effective learning tool for deaf and hard of hearing people, as well as those with visual, physical or learning difficulties.
We teach a hearing transcriber to use a notebook computer with the TypeWell abbreviation software to transcribe meaning-for-meaning what is said in lectures and discussions.
The deaf person reads the transcript in real-time from a second computer.
He or she can also type questions and comments to the transcriber to be voiced and can take notes right in the TypeWell program on the second computer.
In addition to communication access during class, TypeWell transcribers usually provide notes for after-class study.
For more information, see this video about how TypeWell is used.
We've organized the information at our website to answer questions from different perspectives.
